Windows 10 is a forthcoming version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Its development was aimed with an intention to overcome the shortcomings introduced in Windows 8 and 8.1.
Microsoft Windows 10 was first hinted at the Software Giant’s Build Conference in April 2014, claimed to be working on an update to Windows 8, which was codenamed as Threshold. There were speculations that Threshold would be branded as "Windows 9" when released for the public.
The user interface of Windows 10 has been primarily optimized based upon its experience on the type of device (touch or non-touch) and available inputs devices, providing "the right experience on the right device at the right time."
10 new features in Windows 10:
The prominent changes and the new features brought in by Microsoft in Windows 10 with respect to its previous versions of Windows have been described below:1) Start Menu
The new Start Menu is divides into two different panes. The pane on the left side has the traditional functionality of a Windows Start Menu along with an advanced search bar. The right pane contains all the pinned apps displayed in form of live tiles.
2) Task View Button
The shortcut Alt + Tab to switch between applications has been a common feature among many Windows users. This "Task View" has been made possible on Touch based devices with the help of the Task View Button in Windows 10. It is similar to the OS X’s Expose function. On clicking the Task View button present on the taskbar, all the windows currently open on desktop are displayed allowing users to swap between them.
3) Virtual Desktop in W10
A new virtual desktop system has been introduced in Windows 10. This feature allows you to create separate "Desktops" that run side-by-side. This feature was actually available as a SysInternals utility and has now been enhanced and integrated into Windows 10. It has been a part of the Linux and the Mac operating systems over the past years.
4) Universal Apps with unified App Store
With Windows 10, a new app model will emerge – the Universal Windows apps, allowing Windows Runtime apps to be ported to Windows Phone 8.1 and Xbox One while sharing a common codebase, and allowing user data and licenses for an app to be shared between multiple platforms. In short Windows 10 Apps will be able to run on all windows based devices. There will be a single app store across the lot. Developers will now be able to create one app that runs across all Windows devices. All the apps present in Windows 8.1 store will be compatible in Windows 10. So there is no necessity to develop apps specifically for Windows 10. You may try to run the app Smart Tic Tac Toe present in Windows 8.1 app store.
The “HOME” in the new windows 10 shows any locations designated as Favorites, apart from the frequently-used folders and recent files.
Microsoft is still working on this technology and it wishes to have it patched in the first release of Windows 10.
Microsoft on September 30, 2014 unveiled the preview version of Windows 10, chiefly oriented towards testing by enterprise and enthusiast users and hence forth collect feedback from users.
It is scheduled to be released in late 2015. Microsoft also introduced a new "Windows Insider" program. Users enrolled under this program will receive updated pre-release builds of Windows 10. This would also allow the software giant to gather additional feedback on the operating system throughout the development process.

5) Apps in Windows Explorer:
Windows Store apps, which earlier could be viewed and used only in a full-screen environment, can now be used within windows explorer making it fully customizable in terms of resizing the window. All the apps’ activities previously performed on the Charms can here be achieved using the "App Commands" menu on the titlebar of the window.6) 21st century Command Prompt
Microsoft has updated its Command Prompt in Windows 10. Microsoft has given it the ability to recognize keyboard shortcut key combinations. Yeah…you read it right. Now you can use ctrl + v to paste on the command prompt screen. Though the update is insignificant in comparison to its other updates, but it would still be helpful to those of us using cmd. Other new additionals are clear from the dialog box in the picture given below.7) Snap enhancements
The all new Snap Assist feature for the first time in a Windows Operating System is pretty much exciting and useful. This enhancement helps users to have at most four apps snapped on the same screen with a new quadrant layout. Windows will also show other apps and programs running for additional snapping and even make smart suggestions on filling available screen space with other open apps.8) “HOME” in windows explorer
The home is a new and the default location in Windows Explorer in Windows 10. In prior versions of Windows, a Windows Explorer would display a list of drives and some basic libraries.The “HOME” in the new windows 10 shows any locations designated as Favorites, apart from the frequently-used folders and recent files.
9) Cortana may come in Desktop
The present voice assistance in Windows 10 is just a redundant search box. Microsoft has been working on an advanced voice assistant for the desktop version which can both accept a wide variety of voice commands and do many functions directly from search. In the future, this might eventually be re-branded as Cortana, as in Windows Phone 8.1.10) Continuum!
Continuum is a new technology from Microsoft that auto-senses the user experience and adapts the changes in the UI depending upon touch-based and non-touch interface behaviors for devices such as convertible laptops and tablets with a keyboard dock. When plugging in a keyboard, users will be asked if they want to remain in a touch-optimized user interface, or switch to a mode optimized for a mouse and keyboard.Microsoft is still working on this technology and it wishes to have it patched in the first release of Windows 10.
